Eco Bags

Saturday March 7th 2009

An almost full class again so we had the clattering of many busy machines and the chattering of happy voices.

Our main materials were the plastic pockets that are normally used to store paper work in a folder. As these become damaged, holes breaking, slightly tearing in the corners, getting creased, then they are not so practical for the job for which they are intended. So instead of throwing them out, why not reuse them to create a bag.

These were filled with recycled fabrics like unwanted scarves, old sheer drapes, painted papers or sweet wrappers. The pockets were quilted all over to hold the contents in place. This was when the decisions had to be made. Did the students use straight stitch, pattern stitches, free machining or a combination of them all?

A lot of sewing and laughter later, these pockets were cut up into squares, rectangles and other shapes before being sewn back together into pieces big enough to make a small bag. Decorative ribbons were added to the handles and to the side and bottom seams of the bags to add strength.

All in all a long day culminated in the making of very decorative practical bags and students left with ideas buzzing of how to adapt this idea into other useful items such as gift bags, sponge bags, wine bottle carriers and many more.

Fully illustrated instructions are available to make these bags in two sizes. Please use the contact page to email for information.
